Value-added services (VAS) enhance the value of a product in the warehouse. A value-added service order (VAS order) is used to perform these services in the warehouse through VAS activities, and to document them. Typical VAS activities include assembling products, packing products, labeling, oiling etc.
In this blog we are going to demonstrate a scenario where VAS needs to be executed for a product which is being received from the supplier. Before final putaway of the product, we need to perform two VAS activities i.e. Oiling and the packing.
VAS can be performed using POSC. Value-Added Services with Process Oriented Storage Control. If you are using process-oriented storage control, the system proceeds as follows:
1. For each item, the system determines the corresponding packaging specification.
2. The system creates a VAS order based on the inbound delivery or the outbound delivery order.
3. The system then creates handling unit warehouse tasks that contain a work center as the destination storage location in accordance with the VAS order.
4.After completing all value-added services, the products reach the goods issue area or the final storage bin.
In this case, the auxiliary material which will be used to perform VAS activities are also inventory material i.e. after VAS activity is confirmed, the relevant Aux material should also get consumed automatically.
This means, For the value-added services performed at the work centers, you can record which auxiliary products you used for particular activities, and in what amounts.
The below mentioned configuration steps can be employed to achieve this functionality:
Pre-requisite Configuration settings for POSC: –
- Create a Workcenter storage type ZOIL.
- SCM Extended Warehouse Management-Extended Warehouse Management-Master Data-Define Storage Types.
Link this workcenter storage type for workcenter ZOIL.
Path ->SCM Extended Warehouse Management-Extended Warehouse Management-Master Data-Work Center-Define Work Center.

Path -> SCM Extended Warehouse Management-Extended Warehouse Management-Master Data-Work Center-Define Work Center
To automate the task creation we will be using POSC. Four external steps needs to be used.
Path -> SCM Extended Warehouse Management- Extended Warehouse Management- Cross-Process Settings- Warehouse Task- Define Process-Oriented Storage Control
Storage process AVAS created.
Assigning all the external steps to storage process.
For external steps VS01 and VS02, hard code the destination bins
Storage process created needs to be assigned to WPT.
Path -> SCM Extended Warehouse Management- Extended Warehouse Management- Cross-Process Settings- Warehouse Task- Define Warehouse Process Type
Prerequisite setting for Product groups –
Product group types and product groups serve to group products of the same kind. You define a product group type for the criterion with which the product groups are to be formed.
Path -> SCM Extended Warehouse Management->SCM Basis – Master Data – Product- Product Groups – Define Product Group Types
Path -> SCM Extended Warehouse Management- SCM Basis – Master Data – Product- Product Groups – Define Product Groups.
Pre-requisite settings for activating VAS.
Activating the number ranges –
Path -> SCM Extended Warehouse Management- Extended Warehouse Management- Cross-Process Settings- Value-Added Services (VAS)- Define Number Range for VAS Order
Define relevance for VAS Order.
SCM Extended Warehouse Management- Extended Warehouse Management- Value-Added Services (VAS)- Define Relevance for VAS
Number range interval assignment to the warehouse.

Important Master data settings –
The pack spec will be maintained by providing the condition record and packaging material using the transaction code /SCWM/PACKSPEC. Also make sure, you have maintained a packaging specification and have assigned auxiliary packaging materials to the packaging specification levels. Condition record is maintained in the pack spec.
We can see that packspec is maintained for the final product GearBox.
First level here is for Oiling using the Auxiliary material as 2600000043.Please note that this auxiliary material is inventory material, and we have stock of this material. Considering this, expectation is, this material should get consumed automatically once the Oiling step is done.
Second level here is for repacking. After Oiling is done, product will be repacked into another HU.
Finished product which is supposed to be received and is relevant for VAS needs to be updated with Product group and group type.
Auxiliary material for which consumption is expected should be activated with this flag.
For auxiliary material, consumption should happen automatically. For this, You must assign a storage bin to a work center or to a warehouse number from where you post the auxiliary products in goods issue. The stock of the auxiliary products is located in this storage bin, and this stock is then also consumed by this storage bin as part of the value-added services.
To assign a storage bin, on the SAP Easy Access screen, choose Path -> Extended Warehouse Management → Master Data → Assign Storage Bins for VAS Consumption Posting.
Test case demonstrating
The movement of Handling unit from staging area to final putaway. In this we will also observe the auto consumption of auxiliary material in VAS activity of Oiling.
An IBD is created for the finished good. After unloading the IBD we can see that task is created to move the HU from staging area to work center related to Oiling. This has happened because of the storage process AVAS which we created in the pre-requisite configuration settings.
Please note that, the moment IBD is distributed to EWM, VAS order gets created because of the pre-requisite configuration done above.
The open task of the IBD is confirmed and after the confirmation, HU will be in VAS workstation ZOIL.
In this workstation, VAS activities are executed, and the status of the VAS is set to completed. We can see that, after VAS activities are completed, aux material is also consumed automatically in the background.
Detailed view of the VAS order.
In EWM, we can see that in background below document gets posted.
In ERP, we can see that material document posted using movement type 291(Consumption for all account assignments from warehouse).
After completing VAS activities related to Oiling, we need to click on Complete process step for HU.
Above activity created a task to move the HU from ZOIL workstation to ZPAC workstation.
From here, it’s a same process. Confirm a task, Goto workstation ZPAC and complete the VAS activities. After completing the VAS activities, complete HU step so that subsequent task can get created.
Task confirmed.
HU is in ZPAC workcenter. Completed the VAS activity.
VAS activity completed and HU step completed.
We can see that subsequent task is created.
