SAP Embedded Extended Warehouse Management (EWM) and Transportation Management (TM) integration in SAP S/4 HANA is a game-changer for logistics and supply chain management. With the combination of these two powerful SAP modules, businesses can optimize their warehouse operations, streamline transportation processes, and enhance overall efficiency. This integration allows for real-time visibility and control across the entire supply chain, enabling companies to make faster and more informed decisions. In this blog, we will explore SAP Embedded EWM and TM integration in SAP S/4 HANA.
Embedded EWM and TM Integration Outbound Process Flow (as per SAPS4 HANA 2020)
The communication integration between EWM and TM is achieved through the utilization of the LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) message type.
Simplified Process Flow
- An OBD (Outbound Delivery) is created in SAP S/4HANA based on the sales order.
- A Freight unit is created in S/4 embedded TM using the Freight Unit Builder Rule (FUBR) from the OBD in S/4 HANA.
- The OBD is then distributed to EWM (Extended Warehouse Management) and an ODO (Outbound Delivery Order) is created.
- Based on transportation planning, a freight order is generated using a TM optimizer, either manually or automatically.
- After receiving the loading instruction from the freight order, a Transportation unit is created in the EWM system with reference to the freight order’s planning.
EWM process
There are several steps that need to be followed for a smooth operation:
- First, a picking request is created against the outbound delivery request.
- Next, picking labels are generated and placed on the pallets.
- The pallets are then moved to the staging area.
- Once in the staging area, the pallets are assigned or loaded onto a transportation unit.
- In EWM, the transportation unit triggers a goods issue which updates the GI posting in S/4 HANA.
- Additionally, when the TU status is set as “Departure from Checkpoint” in TM, the freight order is updated with packing and loading instructions from EWM.
- Furthermore, handling units in EWM will also be updated in SAP-embedded TM and will appear in the Package ID field of the freight order. This streamlined process ensures efficient management of goods throughout each step.
Failed Messages
- In order to address any failed or pending messages in the Transportation unit, it is necessary to check the SRT_MONI or T-code SXMB_MONI.
Basic Configuration
- Additionally, it is important to ensure proper functional configuration for EWM-TM integration in the OBD scenario. This will help optimize efficiency and effectiveness in this area.
Define EWM integration profile – The EWM integration profile plays a vital role in streamlining operations and enhancing efficiency. This setting empowers users to seamlessly initiate the loading instruction from TM to EWM, whether through manual or automatic means. Additionally, it provides the flexibility to trigger the instruction multiple times as needed, offering optimum control and customization. With this feature in place, businesses can maximize their productivity and ensure smooth integration between TM and EWM systems.
- By selecting the Loading/Unloading instruction option, users can manually initiate this process with ease.
Freight Order Type
The integration profile is assigned with the freight order type, which allows for seamless communication between systems. To create a transportation activity in SAP EWM, the document creation field will be set as “Transportation activity creation in SAP EWM.” This ensures that messages are sent from TM to EWM promptly. With the processing set to “Immediate,” you can expect efficient and real-time handling of freight orders.
PPF Action
In order to activate the Post-processing framework action, it is necessary to assign the output profile with /SCMTMS/TOR. Defining the PPF action in the freight order type enables communication between TM (Transportation Management) and EWM (Extended Warehouse Management). Don’t forget to maintain the action profile in the PPF application for seamless integration and efficient operations.
Application | Action Profile | Action definition |
/SCMTMS/TRANSPORTATION | /SCMTMS/TOR | TOR_LDAP_CNC |
/SCMTMS/TRANSPORTATION | /SCMTMS/TOR | TOR_LDP_REQ |
/SCMTMS/SHP_RCS | /SCM/TU | /SCWM/SR_SEND_TU_LDAP_NOTI |
Packing Material
Assignment of Packing material type with packing material category
- Allowed packing material type
- Link the TU with packing material for TU with means of transport
