Configuration steps HU Management in SAP ERP –
- Define Packaging Material Type
The packaging material type combines packaging materials into groups contains essential controls features for which apply to the corresponding shipping material. When you specify a shipping material type in material master record, each shipping material is assigned to a shipping material type.
Configuration path-
SAP IMG Screen> Logistics General> Handling Unit Management> Basics> Define Packaging Material Types for Shipping
- Define Material group for Packaging Material
In this IMG Activity, you define material grouping for packaging materials with which materials that are to be packed into similar packaging materials are grouped together. The material grouping for packaging materials is entered in the material master record of the shipping material.
Configuration path –
SAP IMG Screen> Logistics General> Handling Unit Management> Basics>Define Material Group for Packaging Materials’
- Define Allowed Packaging Material materials or handling unit.
When packing materials or handling unit, the system checks whether the packaging materials for handling unit, to which the items are to be packed, is allowed for packing. In this IMG activity we assign packaging materials type to the material groups for packaging materials, we defined which packing materials are allowed for packing.
By assigning shipping material types to material groups for shipping materials, we define which shipping materials are allowed for packing.
Configuration path –
SAP IMG Screen>Logistics General> Handling Unit Management>Basics>Define Allowed Packaging Materials
- Maintain Number Ranges for Handling Unit.
Maintain Number ranges for number assignment for handling unit identification via number range interval.
Configuration steps HU Management in SAP EWM –
- Define Packaging Material Types for Warehousing.
Configuration path –
SAP IMG Screen> SCM EWM> Extended Warehouse Management> Cross Process Settings> Handling Unit> Basics>Define Packaging Material Types for Warehousing
2. Maintain Allowed Packaging Material Types for Packing Group
Configuration path –
SCM EWM> Extended Warehouse Management> Cross Process Settings> Handling Unit> Basics> Maintained Allowed Packaging Material Type for Packing group.
3. Define HU Type
In this IMG activity, you define handling unit types (HU types) for the additionally defined material master attribute. You need HU types in Extended Warehouse Management to classify packaging materials and handling units with the same physical properties.
Configuration path –
Menu Path: SAP IMG Screen> Integration with other SAP Components> Extended Warehouse Management> Additional Material Attributes> Attributes Values for Additional Material master fields-Define Handling Unit Type
4. Define HU Type Group
In this IMG Activities, we define the HU type groups. We can use HU type groups to group together similar HU types.
Configuration path –
SCM EWM> Extended Warehouse Management> Cross Process Settings> Handling Unit> Basics> Define HU type group.
5. Define HU Type for Each Warehouse Number and Assign HU Type Group
In this IMG Activities, we specify which of the generally available handling unit (HU) types you want to use or permit in your warehouse.
Configuration path –
SCM EWM> Extended Warehouse Management> Cross Process Settings> Handling Unit> Basics> Define HU type for Each Warehouse Number and Assign HU Type Group
6. Define Number Range for HU Identification
Note: We will use same number range as we define in ERP HU Management, only difference that the Internal Number range will be External in EWM and External Number Range in ERP will be internal in EWM.
Configuration path –
SCM Extended Warehouse Management-Extended Warehouse Management-Cross-Process Settings-Handling Units-External Identification-Define Number Range for HU Identification
SCM Extended Warehouse Management- Extended Warehouse Management- Cross-Process Settings- Handling Units- External Identification- Assign Number Range Intervals to Packaging Material Types
After all configurations are done then we need to create a packaging material and assign the packaging material type and the group in material master.
Also, the HU type needs to be assigned in WM packaging view of the material master.
7. Configuration needed to work with Inbound POSC and LOSC in EWM.
Before we configure POSC and LOSC related things we need to make sure that inbound storage type search strategies and other basic configuration is in place.
- Make sure that, final destination storage type is in place. In this case, we will be using AKUM storage type for testing the flow.

4. A staging area is an interim storage area for goods that have been received from goods receipt and afterwards need to be transferred into the warehouse. The determination of staging bay & goods movement bin is mandatory in the EWM.
In this case, we will use staging areas 9010 and 9020 for Inbound and Outbound flow respectively.
Define staging areas.
Configuration path –
SCM Extended Warehouse Management- Extended Warehouse Management- Master Data- Staging Areas / Define Staging Area and Door Determination Groups
In the business, sometimes different products need to be staged through a special way, for example temperature sensitive products etc. So, we need to determine different door & staging area for special needs products which have these facilities like -chilled products etc. This is done through staging area and door determination groups which is configured here.
We have configured below staging area and door determination group.
5. Define warehouse door.
Here we define warehouse doors for each warehouse along with the loading direction – either only inbound, only outbound, or both inbound and outbound.
Configuration path –
SCM Extended Warehouse Management- Extended Warehouse Management- Master Data- Warehouse Door- Define Warehouse Door/ Assign Staging Area/Door Determination Group to Door/ Assign Staging Area to Warehouse Door
In this IMG activity, you define which staging area groups/door determination groups are permitted for a warehouse door.
In this Customizing activity, you make the assignment between staging areas and doors.
EWM put away strategy related configuration-
- Storage Type Determination
The first step to determine the destination storage bin for putaway is to know the destination storage type. Storage type is maintained and determined from the storage type search sequence as per the configuration. This configuration is based on several attributes like warehouse process type, putaway control indicator (maintained in the product master).
The storage type search sequence contains the list of storage types that can be searched, as per the sequence configured to determine the storage bins.
In this case, we will be using seq AKUM.
Configuration path –
SCM Extended Warehouse Management- Extended Warehouse Management- Goods Receipt Process- Strategies- Storage Type Search- Define Storage Type Search Sequence for Putaway
Assign Storage Types to Storage Type Search Sequence.
We can see that, only storage type AKUM is linked to the search sequence AKUM.
2. Define Putaway Control Indicator.
We have created a new PACI AKUM.
Specify Storage Type Search Sequence for Putaway
Using PACI and WPT, search sequence can be determined. In this case we have only used WPT 1011 to determine the Search sequence.
Optimize Access Strategy for Storage Type Search: Putaway
3. Storage section search

Maintain Storage Section Search Sequence
4. Make sure that HU types which we are receiving are valid in storage type.
SCM Extended Warehouse Management- Extended Warehouse Management- Goods Receipt Process- HU Types- Define HU Types for Each Storage Type
In below IMG activity, you define the storage bin types for each HU type to which you can perform putaway. These definitions are used by storage bin type determination. Using the allowed storage bin types for each HU type, the system checks whether a storage bin can be used.
The search for a destination storage bin is restricted to these allowed storage bin types, where the system runs through the storage bin types in sequence, according to the sequence of the entries in this table.

5. Define Process Oriented Storage Control:
SCM Extended Warehouse Management- Extended Warehouse Management- Cross-Process Settings- Warehouse Task- Define Process-Oriented Storage Control.
Here we have created two steps, IB01 for unloading and IB02 for putaway.
Created storage process INB1.
Assigned two steps created before to this storage process.
Under process-Oriented storage process folder, we need to give details related to step 1.
Warehouse process type determination
- In WPT, we need to assign the storage process which we have created.

2. WPT determination.
SCM Extended Warehouse Management- Extended Warehouse Management- Cross-Process Settings- Warehouse Task- Determine Warehouse Process Type
LOSC configuration –
SCM Extended Warehouse Management- Extended Warehouse Management- Cross-Process Settings- Warehouse Task- Define Layout-Oriented Storage Process Control
This config means, any HU moving from source 9010 to destination AKUM will go via storage type 0081. Please note, before performing this config make sure that Interim bin is created first.
Master data setup –
In product master (/SCWM/MAT1), make sure that correct proc type det. Ind. is updated. This indicator is used to determine the WPT.
In product master make sure below parameters are updated correctly. All these parameters will be used to determine storage type, storage section, bin type and staging area/door respectively.
In transaction, /scwm/door_scu, make sure assign the door bin to the warehouse door.
This Door bin should be created first using /scwm/ls01 transaction and should be linked to 9030 storage type.
In transaction /SCWM/STADET_IN we need to maintain data like below. In this SAP easy transaction, we maintain the staging area and door determination.
In this, we are determining the door using WPT and Door determination group.
/SCWM/STADET_ASS – Access Sequence to Staging Areas and Door Determination
Here we do the settings how system should determine the staging area as per priority.
Test case –
Expected results –
WPT 1011 should get determined in IBD and eventually POSC INB1 should get determined.
Staging area – 9010/0001/AKUM-INB should get determined in IBD.
Door Bin, D.AKUM should get determined.
Final destination storage type should be AKUM and the section should be FAST.
Actual results –
IBD 180001910 created in ERP.
In EWM, IBD got replicated. As expected, we see that all the relevant data got populated.
Since we want to work with POSC and LOSC so completed the packing and create HU.
Now did the unloading. After unloading we can see that three tasks got created.
Task 100000000300 is unloading task.
Task 100000000303 is to move the HU from staging area to ID point.
Task 100000000304 is to move the move the HU from ID point to final putaway bin. This task remains in wait status till the previous task is confirmed.
After confirming the task 100000000303 we can see that task 100000000302 got available for the confirmation.
Confirmed all the tasks and eventually flow is completed.
